Health
In the bunny world your rabbit could face two very serious killer diseases and they will need to be vaccinated against them. Myxomatosis and VHD are killer diseases and your rabbit will need vaccinations every 6-12 months this will cost around £20 yes it's very expensive but once your rabbit has caught one of the diseases it will die a slow painful death, there is no cure once the rabbit is infected. If you live out near a field then it might be a good idea to get your rabbit vaccinated every 6 months if not every year.
To keep your rabbit happy and healthy clean them out once or twice a week.
NOTE: Larger rabbits may need to be cleaned out twice a week.
Check your bunnies bottom daily because rabbits can get flystrike. This is when flies lay eggs on your rabbit and hatch into maggots they then eat into your rabbits flesh. You can buy products to help prevent flys but one I find effective if Rear Guard it cost about £12 from your vets but it prevents and gets rid of flystrike. You can buy sprays to prevent flys from coming into your rabbits hutch. Fly strike normally only occurs in the summer.
Rabbits nails will need cutting every few months, this can be done at home but ask your vet to show you so you can do it correctly. Wet matted fur or a runny eye may indicate the claws are too long and need cutting.
Rabbits teeth never stop growing and could cause serious problems. The front teeth can be seen by you at home just fold back the top lip. The back ones however cannont be seen at home, if you supect they might be causing problems contact the vet. Signs for problems might be the bunny is dribbiling, losing weight, stop eating his/hers favourite food and it could even be the rabbit stops eating altogether.
Rabbits don't get colds so if you see your rabbit sneezing a lot or has a runny nose take him to the vet.
If you find lots of dandruff on your bunny he/she may have mites take him to the vets to get an injection. Sprays are avalible but are not as effective but DON'T use flea sprays because these can be harmful to your bunny.
Rabbits ears are normally trouble free. If your bunny is shaking it's head frequently or it has lots of wax take your bunny to the vet.
If you see hay or dust in your rabbits eye remove it, you can buy special wipes design for eyes that clears the eye. Larger rabbits can get blocked tearducts you will know if your rabbit has this becuase stuff that looks like water will be around the eye area take your bunny to the vets. You can bathe the eye to help the problem but this is only temporary.
If your rabbit has broken, infected or red skin take it to the vets to be treated. It's more common in larger rabbits to get a small bare pink patch but small breeds of rabbit can too.
Many people worm their cat or dog but it's also important to worm your rabbit. My rabbits have never got worms but it's still an important thing to do. If any rabbit does get worms it can be fatal. Also worming prevents mites. Get panacur from your vets today!
You can get your rabbits myxomatosis jab as young as 8 weeks but you'll need to get it's VHD done 2 weeks after the first vaccination. Some vets prefer to get them done at the same time but it's really up to you.
If you find any cobwebs around the front of your rabbits hutch it's best the leave it there especially in the summer as the cobwebs will prevent flies from entering your rabbits hutch.
