Diet
A healthy diet for a rabbit consists of mainly hay and grass plus small quantities of commercial rabbit food and vegetables/fruit that are sutible.
Rabbits are Herbivorous.
Dark leafy greens can be fed, alongside the bunnies normal diet. Fruit and vegetables can also be fed. Try not to give your rabbit to many starch or sugar filled treats.
Remember NEVER change your rabbits diet suddenly- switch foods over a period of 1-2 weeks because this can cause fatal stomach upsets.
Commercial Rabbit food is the stuff you see in the shop that is either pellets or museli. Pellets are better for your rabbits health as it prevents selective feeding (when the rabbit only eats it's favourite pieces of the food not the healthy pieces) but these are not as popular due to it's colour. Museli can be good for your rabbit but just make sure you see a range of the museli pieces being eaten so you know your rabbit is also eating the healthy pieces and getting a balanced diet.
Museli
If you want to feed your rabbit museli I think Mr Johnsons Supreme is the best. It contains everything your rabbit needs and it's great to feed your rabbit if they won't eat pellets.
Pellets
I think if you want to feed your rabbit on pellets choose Supa Excel. There are different types of Excel for your rabbit so choose the best one.
Rabbits should have fresh water everyday and make sure hay or dried grass is avalible as well. Buying bales of hay from farms or shops that supply horse food is the best place to get your hay. Hay from pets shops is placed in bags which can create mould. You won't be able to see the mould but your rabbit will be able to tell and won't eat it. 75% - 90% of your rabbits diet is hay which is why it's important that they eat it. Eating hay also helps rabbits teeth from "over growing".
Remember always give your rabbit a balanced diet that includes, the rabbits commercial rabbit food museli or pellets, fresh fruit and vegetables, hay and/or dried grass and rabbits should always have access to fresh clean drinking water. Always allow your rabbitt have access to a run (weather permitted).
Don't let your rabbit get overweight. Overweight bunnies develope all sorts of problems. One serious problem happens when overweight rabbits get so fat that they can't reach the area around thier bums. As rabbits have two types of poos (one during night which is eaten directly from their bums, this provides more nutrients and also the ones that look like small plump raisins). The ones eaten at night get stuck as your rabbit can't reach to eat it, so overweight rabbits also don't get all the nutrients they should and this can also lead to flystrike.
How to help your rabbit loose weight: First of all when your rabbit is overweight always check their bottoms in the morning and remove any poo seen around their bums. Next buy a light, low calorie food (Excel lite as this helps your rabbits weight go down and then stabalise it) but remember change this food gradually. Feed your rabbit only once a day so in the morning give it lots of hay and dried grass then at night give you rabbit it's commercial light food. Replace any sugar and starch filled treats with fruit and vegetables. Finally let you rabbit have access to a run or maybe let it run around your garden for a few hours (depending on the size supervise your rabbit).
